At PlanetNix 2026, DeepComputing Founder & CEO Yuning Liang joined Nix maintainer Tristan Ross for a compelling session exploring the current state of NixOS on RISC-V and the work required to make open, reproducible computing a reality on next-generation hardware.
The session focused on DeepComputing and Tristan’s efforts to bring NixOS to RISC-V platforms, using the upcoming DeepComputing AI PC as a primary development target. As interest in open hardware continues to grow, NixOS and RISC-V represent a powerful combination—both built around openness, transparency, and developer empowerment.
Yuning and Tristan provided an honest look at the technical challenges involved in making this vision practical for developers.
The discussion reinforced a shared belief among both the NixOS and RISC-V communities: open ecosystems thrive when hardware, software, and development processes are built in the open.
