Yuning Joins RISC-V in Space: Exploring the Future of Open Computing Beyond Earth

On April 2, DeepComputing’s Founder & CEO Yuning Liang, had the honor of participating in RISC-V in Spacein Gothenburg, Sweden, a specialized workshop exploring how open-source hardware can power the next generation of space exploration technologies.

The event brought together experts from aerospace, academia, and the open-source community to discuss the growing role of RISC-V architecture in satellite systems, deep-space missions, and edge AI in orbit. As a representative of DeepComputing, Yuning shared insights into our work with RISC-V laptops and AI PCs—and how these platforms can inspire future open and modular computing systems even in extreme environments.

Yuning emphasized the significant hurdles in bringing RISC-V hardware to mass production. From long chip development cycles (often 7+ years) to limited resources compared to giants like ARM, he painted an honest picture of what it takes to build RISC-V-powered consumer electronics, including DeepComputing’s own DC-ROMA Laptop series and RISC-V AI PCs.

He reflected on the ecosystem’s “chasing the tail” issue, where hardware waits for software, software waits for applications, and applications wait for hardware maturity. DeepComputing’s answer? Build everything — from IP to SOC to products — with standard, modular, open interfaces to shorten that cycle.

This event showed that RISC-V is not just a lab experiment—it’s being actively adopted for real-world space systems. With support from public and private stakeholders, RISC-V is poised to become a cornerstone of space computing over the next decade.
