World RISC-V Days Recap: Boston Edition

As part of World RISC-V Days, DeepComputing and Red Hat co-hosted a dynamic half-day, hands-on workshop in Boston — bringing real RISC-V hardware directly into the hands of developers.

Hosted at the Red Hat office on February 27, the workshop welcomed around 50 attendees for an interactive deep dive into the growing RISC-V ecosystem.

Up Close with DC-ROMA RISC-V Mainboard

Participants had the opportunity to experience the DC-ROMA RISC-Vlaptop firsthand. Built on the modular Framework Laptop 13 chassis, the DC-ROMA platform demonstrates the flexibility and practical potential of RISC-V in personal computing.

For the hands-on portion, up to 10 laptops were made available (shared among participants), allowing attendees to walk through:

  • Setting up and launching Fedora on RISC-V
  • Platform-specific optimizations
  • Exploring performance considerations
  • Even running a local LLM on the device

The interactive format gave developers a practical understanding of what it means to run Fedora on emerging RISC-V hardware — not just in theory, but in real workflows.

Insights from Red Hat and DeepComputing

The day began at 10 a.m. with presentations interwoven between technical exploration sessions.

Matt St. Onge from Red Hat shared perspectives on RISC-V’s strategic importance and Fedora’s ongoing support for the architecture.

Yuning Liang discussed DeepComputing’s journey in building RISC-V laptops and advancing practical, developer-ready platforms.

Together, the sessions covered:

  • The broader RISC-V landscape
  • Red Hat’s engagement with the platform
  • Fedora enablement progress
  • DeepComputing’s hardware roadmap and ecosystem vision

This workshop format was first introduced at RISC-V Summit North America 2025, where it received strong positive feedback. The Boston edition continued that momentum, reinforcing the importance of hands-on collaboration in accelerating ecosystem maturity.
