Real-Time AI Media on RISC-V: DeepComputing at VideoLAN Developer Days 2025

At this year’s VideoLAN Developer Daysin London, DeepComputing joined the community to share real progress on AI-enhanced multimedia running natively on RISC-V. This marks a major milestone — showing that open media, open AI, and open silicon can come together for real, everyday use.

Intelligent Media Playback on RISC-V

Yuning Liang, Founder and CEO of DeepComputing, delivered a session titled Enabling Intelligent Media Playback on RISC-V — Running VLC with Whisper STT and Qwen T2T on a 40-TOPS NPU RISC-V AI SoC. In this talk, he demonstrated how a RISC-V laptop can handle video playback and AI tasks concurrently, without relying on cloud services or proprietary accelerators. On the DC-ROMA RISC-V AI PC, VLC played video smoothly while Whisper generated real-time speech-to-text captions directly on the device. At the same time, Qwen processed text-to-text tasks like translation and summarization locally, taking advantage of the 40-TOPS NPU inside the ESWIN EIC7702 SoC.

This demonstration confirms that RISC-V is evolving into a platform capable of running complex multimedia and AI workloads with real usability — marking meaningful progress for open computing in everyday applications.

Beyond the presentation, we met with partners, developers, and contributors who share the same belief in open computing. Discussions focused on strengthening media performance on RISC-V, improving system tooling and OS support, expanding development resources, and building a polished user experience for open hardware devices.

The takeaway is clear: RISC-V is moving from theoretical potential to real-world readiness. The next phase is about delivering refinement — smoother playback, stronger toolchains, and accessible developer workflows — to make open computing a natural part of everyday tech life.
