FOSDEM 2026 Recap: Bringing Android (AOSP) to RISC-V

At FOSDEM 2026, DeepComputing Founder and CEO Yuning Liang took the stage in the FOSS on Mobile track to share the latest progress on one of the most ambitious efforts in the RISC-V ecosystem: bringing Android (AOSP) to open RISC-V platforms.
The session explored how far the ecosystem has come, what challenges remain, and why upstream collaboration is the key to making RISC-V a first-class architecture for mobile and edge devices.

Why Android on RISC-V Matters

Android is the world’s most widely deployed operating system, powering billions of devices. Enabling Android on RISC-V is not just about adding another architecture — it represents a major step toward a more open and customizable mobile computing stack.

For the RISC-V ecosystem, mobile support unlocks:

As Yuning emphasized during the talk, achieving this goal requires deep cooperation across hardware vendors, OS maintainers, and upstream open-source communities.

Progress So Far

The session highlighted significant milestones achieved over the past year:

  • Booting Android on modern RISC-V platforms
  • Continuous improvements in kernel and driver support
  • Integration work across toolchains, runtimes, and system components
  • Increasing upstream engagement from multiple organizations

These efforts are moving RISC-V closer to becoming a viable platform for consumer devices, not just development boards.

The Real Challenges

Porting Android to a new architecture is far more complex than simply recompiling code.

Some of the key challenges discussed included:

  • Hardware enablement and driver maturity
  • Performance optimization across CPU and AI accelerators
  • Compatibility with Android’s evolving architecture requirements
  • Upstreaming code to ensure long-term sustainability

A major theme of the talk was that upstream-first development is essential. Without upstream support, platforms risk fragmentation and short lifecycles — something the RISC-V community is actively working to avoid.

Collaboration Is the Path Forward

One of the most important messages from the session was that no single company can deliver Android on RISC-V alone.

Progress depends on collaboration across:

  • Silicon vendors
  • Device manufacturers
  • Open-source communities
  • Software developers
  • Standards organizations
